Speed to lead: the Harvard Business Review data on answering first
By The Voxline team
When someone contacts you ready to buy, the clock on that intent starts immediately — and it runs down fast. The definitive data on this comes not from a vendor, but from Harvard Business Review.
What the HBR study found
In “The Short Life of Online Sales Leads”, researchers audited thousands of US firms by submitting test enquiries and timing the response. The findings are blunt:
- The average first response time was 42 hours — and 23% of firms never responded at all.
- Firms that made contact within an hour were nearly 7× more likely to qualify the lead than those that waited just an hour longer.
- Versus firms that waited a day or more, the fast responders were over 60× more likely to qualify the lead.
Why a voice agent wins this by default
If an hour of delay is that expensive, a ringing phone that goes unanswered is a disaster in slow motion. A voice agent answers on the first ring, every time — so you’re not racing to respond within the hour. You’ve already responded, in the first second.
