Nobody leaves a voicemail anymore — and the behaviour isn’t coming back
By The Voxline team
Voicemail feels like a safety net. In practice, most people who reach one simply hang up — and the long-term trend is making that worse, not better.
The behaviour behind it
Ofcom’s research describes a steady shift away from spontaneous voice calls toward messaging and planned contact, with call minutes falling year on year. If people are increasingly reluctant to make a call at all, they’re even less inclined to perform the extra ritual of leaving a voicemail: waiting through the greeting, summarising neatly, and hoping someone rings back before they’ve sorted it elsewhere.
What that means for a business
Treating voicemail as your out-of-hours or overflow plan quietly loses you most of the calls you miss. The fix isn’t a better greeting — it’s not reaching voicemail in the first place. A receptionist that answers, understands, and does something useful with the call keeps the enquiry alive instead of asking the caller to chase you.
Never miss another call.
